Prescriber

Citalopram QT risk

Published on 12/12/11

The maximum dose of citalopram has been limited to 40mg per day in a move to minimise the risk of a dose-dependent increase in the QT interval.

The maximum dose for elderly people and patients with impaired hepatic function is now 20mg per day. Lundbeck and the MHRA have jointly informed prescribers of the dose changes.
Citalopram is now contraindicated in patients with prolonged QT interval and should be used cautiously in patients at risk of developing torsade de pointes, such as those with heart failure or recent myocardial infarction.
