Denosumab: monoclonal to treat osteoporosis
Published on 06/19/10Amgen has launched a monoclonal antibody for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at increased risk of fractures, and for bone loss associated with hormone ablation in men with prostate cancer who are at increased risk of fractures.
Denosumab (Prolia) inhibits osteoclast formation, function and survival. It is administered as a single subcutaneous injection of 60mg once every six months.
Patients must take calcium and vitamin D supplementation during treatment, which is contraindicated in patients with hypocalcaemia. One dose costs £183.
