Sativex approved for MS
Published on 07/19/10The cannabinoid Sativex is now available for the treatment of spasticity unresponsive to other treatments in patients with multiple
sclerosis.
Sativex oromucosal spray contains 2.7mg delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and 2.5mg cannabidiol in each 100µl dose. To minimise dizziness, the dose is titrated over a two-week period to a maximum of 12 sprays per day.
Treatment should be assessed after four weeks and discontinued if there is no clinically significant improvement.
A 10ml vial costs £125. At a typical dose of eight sprays per day, treatment will cost about £11 daily.
